GBGV AKC-FSS Announcement
In August of 2004 the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen was accepted into the American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service
program along with 5 other rare breeds; Estrela Mountain Dog, Kooikerhondje, Mudi, Portuguese Podengo, and the Rat Terrier.
The AKC now has their registry data base set up for the new FSS breeds. GBGV owners can now submit your GBGV’s Pedigree

The 6 new breeds that have been accepted into the AKC Foundation Stock Service this year will have their breed
biographies included in the December 2004 issue of the AKC Gazette.
The road to AKC-FSS recognition has been a long one. The original FSS application for admission was turned into the AKC in
2001. Elaine Dorwart, who was the Foundation Stock Service director at the time, reviewed the application and said it was
complete. “The next step will be to present it to the AKC staff committee for approval.” wrote Ms Dorwart. Well, many political
upheavals within AKC transpired and Elaine Dorwart left AKC employment. The next FSS person was Susan Gray. Susan
renewed the process of organizing people, and paperwork to meet the AKC requirement for the new breed applications.
Tragedy struck when Ms Gray died suddenly leaving the AKC-FSS affairs suspended in mid stride. In comes Patricia Lejman to
pick up the process after the untimely demise of Ms Gray. Ms Lejman accomplished a task which was 3 years in the making,
the AKC review of new FSS breed applications! Congratulations to all the newly recognized breeds!

In July 2001, a completed Foundation Stock Service application was received by the American Kennel Club in an effort to add the GBGV to the AKC-FSS registry. The AKC board will review this and other new FSS breed applications sometime in the future.
