Grand Basset in the United States 97-99 |
The Grand Bassett Griffon has not become popular in the United States. There were originally three Grands imported into the United States. The male, "My Key to du Greffier du Roi", was born in 1989 and exported from Holland to Arlene and Mike Dickinson in Oregon in 1990. "Opening Act du Grefrier du Roi" was imported from Holland by the Dickinson's in 1991. "S'il Vous Plait du Grefrier du Roi" was imported from Holland in 1992 by Carolyn Marzano in Illinois. In 1994, J.M. Ryder and Jennifer King Imported "With Love from du Greffier du Roi". This was the beginning of the Grand in the United States.
My Key was bred to Opening Act and S'il Vous Plait and both produced litters within one week of each other. S'il Vous Plait had a litter of five on January 5, 1994. Five days later on January 10 Opening Act had a litter of ten.
Andrea McEwen Field Became the registrar of the Grand in the United States around this time and the original four Grands were registered with the GBGV Registry. Both litters were also registered and out of the 15 puppies born, eleven were registered.
Although a few other Grands were imported, they have never been registered with the registry until 1999 when Debbie Perrott and Shirley Knipe imported "Neveau Hootwire du Greffier du Roi" (Brulee) from Holland. Since there had been no activity until this time, Mrs. Field had given up the registry and it was taken over by Ms. Perrott. She is aware of two other imports and is in the process of trying to get them registered as this is being written.
"After-Ours Grand Lareny at Hootwire" (Bandit) is currently being shown in the United States in American Rare Breed Association shows. She was bred by Mike and Arlene Dickinson and is owned by Debbie Perrott, Shirley Knipe, and Carolyn Marzano. There has been one other GBGV shown in these shows but it is not registered with the GBGV registry. "Bandit" is currently the 42 All-Breed Rare Breed in the United States and the No. 1 hound. She has had over 21 Best in Shows and is a wonderful ambassador for the breed.
In June of 1999, "Bandit" attended the World Show in Mexico City where she was awarded a Group Two. "Bandit" will be bred to "Brulee" next year and hopefully the breed will continue to prosper in the United States.
